HEILINGBLUT to INNSBRUCK (AUSTRIA) JULY 3rd

Stunning Grossglockner early in the morning !

On our way to Innsbruck today we had a lovely traffic free, sunny morning ride over the Grossglockner.

We stopped for a photo opportunity and got inspected by a sheep -
"Hmmmm that seat looks rather comfortable" -
IMG_4324__1024x683_.jpg
"Can I come ?"
IMG_4325__1024x683_.jpg

The top of the Grossglockner was looking very spectacular today -

Almost to Innsbruck we stopped for fuel and that's when the thunder and lightning started.
We were only 10kms from Innsbruck so decided to make a dash for it before the rain started - bad decision.
Not long down the road we got caught in very heavy rain with nowhere to pull over and put on wet-weather gear. We were soaked with minutes.
We arrived at our rather posh Hotel totally soaked and looking rather miserable.
Later that day our daughter arrived from London ready to start her first ever Motorcycle adventure.

NAUDERS (AUSTRIA) to LAKE COMO (ITALY) JULY 6th

3 Countries in one day !

We started the day in Austria, crossed the Reschenpass into Italy, and then into Switzerland for morning tea. 3 countries by 10:15am !!
We stopped at the top of the Ofenpass (2149m) for a break - Biker friendly cafes are always very obvious -

Seon attracted a new friend -
IMG_5556a__824x1024_.jpg

It was getting very warm by now, Europe is experiencing a Heat Wave - lucky us !!
We stopped just past St. Moritz for another break and a quick photo shoot by the lake IMG_5571a__517x1024_.jpg

Steve doing his best Model pose -
IMG_5565__683x1024_.jpg

Me and Seon looking very glamorous in our bike gear -
IMG_5569__1024x683_.jpg

Me and Steve also looking "glamorous" - and very hot !!!
IMG_5575a__1024x674_.jpg

We were so hot by the time we reached Lake Como we decided a swim was an absolute must, so we all had a dip in the Lake - so refreshing.
Then it was time to find our accommodation - it's an Agriturismo (farm stay) high above the lake.
Unknown to me this also included 10kms of very very windy road - getting smaller and rougher as we progressed up the mountain.
Aitch was loving it- being an ex Motocross rider he was very happy.

Finally we arrived and it was amazing.
IMG_5577a__1024x631_.jpgIMG_5604a__1024x452_.jpgIMG_5610a__1024x631_.jpg

Even the pigs were very pleased to see we made it !!
IMG_5582__1024x683_.jpg

After unpacking the boys enjoyed a pre-dinner beer and a chat with all the other guests, bikers and car people.

IMG_5615__683x1024_.jpg

Then we all gathered around for some more pre-dinner drinks, followed by an amazing meal.
We could not believe the delicious dishes that kept coming out, each better than the last, finished off with coffee & grappa.

LAKE COMO (ITALY) to ANDERMATT (SWITZERLAND) JULY 7th

After a fantastic night at our Agriturismo (farm stay style hotel) high up above Lake Como we wound our way back down the mountain and back on the road again.
No photos - unfortunately - as it was very hazy over Como today.
We went back to Chiavenna Prata for fuel and on to the Splugenplass which is the Italy/Switzerland border. Hoping for a coffee stop we were very disappointed so we kept going.
After a while we stopped for a photo shoot.

Then we came across a fantastic "switch back" road
Steve & Seon with Aitch & Jo further down -

Aitch & Jo having a great time on this one.

Steve & Seon also having a great time - where was I ?? Up the top balancing on the side of the road taking the photo of course !
IMG_5678__1024x683_.jpg

We made it to San Bernandino Pass in time for a very expensive lunch - we are now in Switzerland and prices are very scarey !!
The old boat on the lake across from the Restaurant - still waiting to set sail.
IMG_5700__1024x683_.jpg

Time to keep moving, the temperature has been varying considerably today, sometimes very hot and a lot cooler at the top of the passes.
Over the Lucomagno pass which was a very nice road consisting of long sweeping bends.
Couldn't resist this line up of tractors and luckily we were stopped yet again by traffic works - just enough time to snap a quick shot.
IMG_5702a__1024x483_.jpg

Late afternoon and we stopped at the Oberalppass (2046m) just before Andermatt.
Most of the snow has melted now - just a little bit left here and there.
IMG_5711__1024x683_.jpg

And then into Andermatt where we are staying for 3 nights.

EHRWALD to NAUDERS (AUSTRIA) : JULY 5th

Very hot day riding

Finally the whole crew got together for a group shop before Peter and Dale left for places unknown - will definitely include water !!

IMG_5339__1024x683_.jpg

Aitch & Jo, Meredith & Steve , & Seon then left for Nauders.
It turned out to be a very hot day riding.
Our first stop was a little village where we indulged in some Strudel !!
IMG_5350a__603x1024_.jpg
Harold was definitely not prepared to share -
IMG_5358a__733x1024_.jpg
Seon's first day on the bike - she loved it !!
IMG_5340__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5343a__1024x955_.jpgIMG_5343ab__826x436_.jpg

Looking very glamorous in Motorcycle clothing Seon dashed around taking photos -
IMG_5347__683x1024_.jpg

Now girls this is how you fling yourself onto a motorcycle - check out that leg !!!
IMG_5364a__608x1024_.jpg

Back on the bikes we continued on to Spullersee hoping for a swim only to be disappointed - Spullersee pass is closed to vehicles between and 8am and 4:30pm What?????????

So a new plan - lets go to the Kaunertal, great idea, very hot now though.
We stopped at a stream for picnic and a dip.
Picnic was lovely - water was "achingly" cold - very refreshing - Seon was thrilled to get a bit of help from Mum !! (Chuckle chuckle)
IMG_5373a__1024x1011_.jpg

Re-arranging clothing without falling in is quite a challenge -
IMG_5381__1024x683_.jpg

Kaunertal was well worth the visit - found some snow at last - but it was still hot !!
IMG_5389__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5390a__1024x683_.jpg

Seon in Austria & Italy at the same time -

The local cows seem to think they own the road - IMG_5538__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5541__1024x683_.jpg

We arrived at Nauders (Austria) late afternoon in time for some liquid refershments and the best BBQ ever !!!
Sitting outside catching a breeze we had a lovely evening.

CANAZEI (ITALY) to HEILINGBLUT (AUSTRIA) 1 & 2nd JULY

Dolomites to the Grossglockner

WEDNESDAY
We were rather sad to be leaving the Dolomites today, they are truly spectacular and there are a lot of great roads and brilliant scenery.
Our final Dolomite Pass this morning was the Passo Pordoi (2239m) very pretty and a nice twisty road to start the day.
IMG_4154a__1024x514_.jpgIMG_4149__1024x683_.jpg

Followed by a nice morning riding great roads, we reached the Italy/Austria border and lined up ready to go over the Staller Sattel (2052m)
There is a portion of this pass that is one way only.

Reaching the top we were greeted with a spectacular view back over Italy and into Austria.
IMG_4165__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4168__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4176a__1024x643_.jpg

We arrived at Heilingblut early afternoon in time to have a swim in the best pool in the world (in my opinion!), I then had a massage to loosen up some very tired shoulder muscles, this was followed by a delicious dinner in the restaurant at our hotel (Hotel Glocknerhof)

THURSDAY
Today we headed up the Grossglockner and came across a Goggomobile - (1955-1969) never see this little beauty on the road now
IMG_4180__1024x683_.jpg

and a very spectacular waterfall - melting snow

IMG_4294__1024x683_.jpg
followed by some spectacular views of the Grossglockner (3798m) -
IMG_4185__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4187__1024x683_.jpg

and the spectacular Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps.
IMG_4201__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_4211__1024x683_.jpg
Nougat found some little Marmot friends to have a chat with -
IMG_4205__1024x683_.jpg

And out came the Marmots to have a play/fight - not sure which but they get very excited -
IMG_4238a__1024x875_.jpg
Then we found one just sitting by the path munching on a piece of carrot somebody had given him - oblivious to the fact he was suddenly a star.
IMG_4278__1024x683_.jpg

Nougat had a portrait taken -
IMG_4264a__1024x772_.jpg

One last look for today -
IMG_4253__1024x683_.jpg

The Grossglockner today was very different from when we were here in 2013, that day it was sunny but freezing cold, and there was a lot of snow.
Here are some photos from our 2013 trip - the difference is amazing.

The Pasterze -

I remember waiting ages for the Grossglockner to clear so we could see the top - this is the best I could do -

Nougat and I in front of the Pasterze, it was freezing, we walked around in full bike gear including gloves that day (today was t-shirts only)

Nougat was complaining his bum was cold here -

Back on the road we went up to the Edelweiss - Spitze (2571m)

Again in full sunshine compared to 2013.
