VALLOIRE to BARCELONETTE (FRANCE) JULY 13th

Kangaroos in France

The last thing you expect to see is a Kangaroo in France - not even a "hay" sculpture, just out of Valloire there she was in all her glory !IMG_6166__683x1024_.jpg
IMG_6177__1024x683_.jpg

It was a sculpture competition -
IMG_6164__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6172__683x1024_.jpg
a cheeky person placed an Aussie sticker on the Kangaroo stand - who would do that ????

Continuing on the Route des Grandes Alpes from Valloire we rode over the Col du Galivier (2646m)
The scenery is now really rugged, rocky and quite amazing - loving it !!
IMG_6182__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6184__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6195__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6209__1024x683_.jpg

A little bit of snow still appearing on high peaks -

Taking a diversion we rode out to Mt. Pelvoux (3946m) just to have a look, not able to go to the top we returned back to Briancon for lunch
IMG_6227__1024x683_.jpg

Then on to Col d'Izoard (2360m) followed by the Combre du Queyras and Col de Vars (2109m)

Then into Barcelonnette for the night - another great French village with lots happening in the town square.

IMG_6283__683x1024_.jpgIMG_6285__683x1024_.jpgIMG_6287__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6290__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6295__1024x683_.jpg

Its still very hot and we were not really hungry so decided to order a couple of Bruschetta's and see if we wanted more after that -

yes I think that was definitely enough !!

People watching is a lot of fun, the young girls were having a lovely time entertaining this cute little boy in the square-

MARTIGNY (SWITZERLAND) to VALLOIRE(FRANCE) JULY 12th

Switzerland - Italy - France : all in a days riding !

Breakfast in Switzerland, Lunch in Italy and Dinner in France.
Riding the Route des grande Alpes - Rugged Rocky High Country - totally different to the Alps we have been riding.
A great day starting with the St. Bernard Pass (2469m) where we stopped for lunch in Italy.
IMG_6093__683x1024_.jpgIMG_6089__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6065__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6059__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6056__1024x683_.jpg

We are a very long way from home - Sydney 18,240 kms.
IMG_6095__1024x683_.jpg

IMG_6098__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6106__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6120__1024x683_.jpg
Followed by the Petit St. Bernard Pass (2188m),

the Col de I'Iseran (2764m) I think this is the highest we have done so far !!
IMG_6131__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6133__1024x683_.jpg

and some pretty amazing riding with unbelievable views and "huge" guard rails to stop us going over the edge -
IMG_6141__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6148__1024x683_.jpg

and the final pass for the day - Col du Telegraph (1957m)

IMG_6154__1024x683_.jpg

Coming into Valloire we found a "hay" monument to Marco Pantani who won the Galibier Climb in 1998
IMG_6161__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_6158__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6160__1024x683_.jpg

It is still very hot here in Europe - 30plus degrees most of the day.

We stopped at Valloire for the night which is a really pretty village.

ANDERMATT to THUN (SWITZERLAND) JULY 10 & 11th

Oh Furka !! A sad farewell to our riding companions !!!

Oh Furka "the others" are leaving us tomorrow, but not before one last assault on the Furka Pass - no photos this time, having too much fun just riding this pass in the early morning.
Over the Grimsell Pass and on to the Glaubenbielenpass (1611m) where we stopped at the Biker Café for lunch.

5A592949B7ADBAD501D5887B70348A37.jpgIMG_6010a__1024x760_.jpg
Then over the Schallenbergpass (1167m) and into Thun where Aitch & Jo departed to Motocentre Thun to return their hire bike.
We all caught up at our favourite Italian Restaurant for dinner on the banks of the river.

Saturday morning we were entertained by a local "Music Box" Festival.
IMG_6019__683x1024_.jpgIMG_6046__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6054__1024x683_.jpg

In the streets there were loads of stalls selling all kinds of local produce including stunning roses.
IMG_6023__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6026__1024x683_.jpg

Then it was time to say goodbye to our riding companions - sadly !!!!!
Seon, Aitch & Jo had trains to catch and Steve and I rode through to Martigny for the night.

ANDERMATT (SWITZERLAND) JULY 8th & 9th

oh Furka ! Aussie assault of the European Alps 2015

Quite a long time ago our group were having a chat one day and came up with the idea to "do" a trip to the European Alps.
It has now happened - we have made it. Aitch designed a group T-Shirt featuring the Furka Pass which turned out fantastic and
today we modelled our T-shirts on the Furka Pass.

IMG_5804a__758x1024_.jpgIMG_5807a__1024x769_.jpg
IMG_5798__1024x683_.jpg

The Furka is one of those passes that is unmissable - stunning views, even when not covered in snow, and great riding.

IMG_5770__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5772__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5797__1024x683_.jpg
A lot of "posing" went on today -
IMG_5788__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5782__1024x683_.jpg

Over the pass is equally as stunning -
IMG_5813__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5849__1024x683_.jpg

Next stop was the Rhone Glacier
IMG_5857__1024x683_.jpg

Looking back up to the Furka Pass - look carefully you can see the road zig zagging down the pass
IMG_5864__1024x683_.jpg

After all this excitement we stopped for morning tea - and found the best Plum Tart ever -

IMG_5868__1024x683_.jpg

And the steam train came through town just to add some more excitement to our day -
IMG_5874__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5875a__1024x712_.jpg

Back on the bikes our next stop was the Grimsell Pass (2164m)
Found a couple of old bikers who appear to have been there awhile -
IMG_5885__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5888__1024x683_.jpg
and a new one on her first big bike trip - and loving it !
IMG_5891a__1024x776_.jpg

Today was a perfect day for Motorbike riding - sunny, cool, fresh, very enjoyable day !
IMG_5896__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5898a__729x1024_.jpg

Next stop was our picnic lunch at Sunstenpass (2224m)
IMG_5927__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5910__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5908__1024x683_.jpg

Nougat & Blinky shared their own private picnic-
IMG_5906__1024x683_.jpg

Jo played hide and seek -
IMG_5912__1024x683_.jpg

Then we rode back to Andermatt. Later we went for a walk around town before dinner.
Andermatt is a very quaint little village with lots of accommodation and restaurants, obviously very popular with tourists.
IMG_5969__1024x683_.jpgIMG_6005a__553x1024_.jpg
The Pied Piper by the stream that flows through town - more melted snow.
IMG_5967__683x1024_.jpg

We sat outside our favourite Hotel watching the world go by - and lots of bikes.

Our Hotel-
IMG_5956__1024x683_.jpg

Back to yesterday (Wednesday 8th)
Heavy cloud had settled over Andermatt in the morning so we left our departure up to the St.Gotthard Pass (2091m) until late morning hoping that by he time we got going it would clear - no such luck.
IMG_5736__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5740__1024x683_.jpg

Then it did clear - for about 3 minutes !!
IMG_5742__1024x683_.jpg

Out of the mist appeared the Stage Coach with a re-enactment of the mail run -
IMG_5750a__593x1024_.jpgIMG_5758__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5760a__1024x495_.jpg

We hung around for quite a while hoping it would clear but no such luck,
Steve, Seon and I decided to call it quits and headed back to Andermatt for the rest of the afternoon.

Aitch & Jo (brave souls that they are) ventured forth to the Nufenen Pass and the Furka Pass and then back to Andermatt.

INNSBRUCK (to GARMISCH) to EHRWALD (AUSTRIA) : JULY 4th

Garmisch - Germany : BMW Motorrad Days 2015

It is quite an experience to go to the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch and if you are interested in BMW Motorcycles this is definitely the place to be.
There is so much going on here it is really hard to know where to start.

We started with Russ Swift the Mini Stunt car driver.
IMG_4379__1024x683_.jpg5754A0D7F63AB195AABC7D0858C4D44D.jpgIMG_4374__1024x683_.jpg

Followed by a walk around - bikes everywhere :
IMG_4418__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4421__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5017__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5020__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5016__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_4975__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5014__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5042__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5043__1024x683_.jpg

Innovative ideas - this is my personal favourite :
IMG_4420__1024x683_.jpg

Old bikes
IMG_4422__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4424__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5032__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5028__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5025__1024x683_.jpg
IMG_5024__1024x683_.jpg

A GS with a side-car : you would have to be kidding
IMG_4430__1024x683_.jpg

RnineT with a side-car : you would still have to be kidding

IMG_4427__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4428__1024x683_.jpg

Look what I found - I think I just have to have one of these :
5767D676F8191F1A331DA3DB463EB540.jpg

The totally amazing stunt rider : Chris Pfeiffer

IMG_4443a__805x1024_.jpgIMG_4458a__956x1024_.jpgIMG_4479a__959x1024_.jpgIMG_4492__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4532__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4537__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4542__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4543__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4557a__1024x962_.jpgIMG_4713__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4776__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4801__1024x683_.jpgIMG_4919__1024x683_.jpg

A couple of characters spotted on our site tour :
IMG_5009a__572x1024_.jpgIMG_5046__683x1024_.jpg

Then we went to the Motodrome for a different kind of stunt riding :
IMG_5159__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5198__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5204__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5261__1024x683_.jpgIMG_5308__1024x683_.jpg

The temperature was in the high 30's all day, probably well over 40 in the tents etc. Far too hot to stay.
We decided to leave late afternoon as we were suffering heat exhaustion.
This is an event that must not be missed if you are in or near Garmisch early July. Held annually it is an incredible experience, and all for free.
No entry fee charged !!
